Our personnel have international experience from assisting with the completion of some very challenging projects. Due to client confidentiality we cannot disclose all of the projects that we currently support, or have been involved in, but some previous examples of work that our personnel have been involved in include:
Desktop characterisation study of intermediate level waste (ILW) inventory held by a major UK nuclear licensed site. We were also involved in the delivery of a Best Practicable Environmental Option (BPEO) Study and the production of a strategic review for the long term management of this waste. This project involved working with the client to thoroughly examine various strategic options including near surface near site disposal of ILW and assessment of the associated environmental impact and doses to potentially exposed groups (PEGs). This special project support involved the production of tender documentation, assessment of tender returns, and subsequent peer review of the various sub-contractor deliverables throughout the project’s lifecycle. Support was also given to this client to help them formulate their responses to the Scottish Government as part of the development of Scotland’s Higher Activity Waste Policy and it’s associated documentation.
Remediation of Kiritimati Island in the Central Pacific, characterisation of the associated radiological wastes, consignment of the wastes, organisation of suitable disposal routes, organisation of transfrontier multi-modal transportation of dangerous goods and ultimate recycling and/or disposition of the materials removed during the remediation project. Decommissioning of redundant nuclear facilities at the Rosyth Dockyard – supported radiological protection and radioactive waste management aspects of this work. Radiation Protection support for decommissioning activities at the Dounreay Site in Caithness. A paper on this subject was published at the International Radiation Protection Association European Regional Congress in Florence during 2002. We continue to provide support to clients involved in the decommissioning of this site.
We have also performed work to assess the potential cosmic radiation doses of UK based high altitude mountain guides as a result of their occupational exposure to radiation. Click here for further information on this study which was featured in the May 2012 International Radiation Protection Association conference in Glasgow. A discussion paper on the regulation of these doses was also presented to the International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA) at a conference in Geneva.
RP Alba Ltd personnel have also been working closely with the UK’s Society for Radiological Protection (SRP) to organise a special one day for Scottish Secondary Schools event as part of the program for the International Radiation Protection Association congress in May 2012. This event covers radiation protection, possible career paths and is closely linked to the Scottish curriculum.
Under subcontract, RP Alba Ltd personnel have also delivered training in Liberia on the installation of radiation shielding for the establishment of new healthcare facilities. Our client produced a case study on this work which can be viewed here.
